Hello lovely mamas! Welcome back to Women of Light. Recently I have been thinking about how qualities or properties of light apply to us. There are SO many that I could talk about today but the one I chose to focus on was actually inspired by a StoryBots episode. (As a side note, if you haven’t watched StoryBots yet then you’re missing out!) The particular episode was answering the question, “Why is the sky blue?”
The Simple Science of Light and Color
As you may be well aware, color is the reflection of light waves. Certain waves absorb into an object while others bounce off. We see a red apple when most of the light waves absorb into the apple but the red light waves bounce off of it. We see a blue sky when most of the colors get absorbed but the blue light waves bounce off particles in the air. We see white when all the colored light waves bounce off an object, while black is when they all get absorbed.
So what does this have to do with us? I was looking at this from the perspective of letting things go. Often as mothers we feel like we have to take everything on. However, it’s beautiful what happens when light doesn’t fully absorb but certain waves bounce off an object, isn’t it? We wouldn’t see all the beautiful colors if light waves just absorbed into everything, life would just be black. And if everything just bounced life would all be white. Bland. Boring.
Applying This to My Life
Likewise there’s beauty in our letting things go. Maybe we need to let something go in order to spend more time with our child(ren). Maybe we need to let something go in order to preserve our sanity. Maybe we need to let something go in order to create space for a hobby or past-time we love. It may not be anything bad that we are doing with our time, we just need to prioritize. There are so many good things we can do in life; and there are better things than those. Still, there are best ways to use our time. What is best for you and your family? What phase of life are you in right now? What can you forgo now that you might be able to focus on when your children are older? What can you make room for now? You get to decide! Isn’t that great?!
Overwhelm and stress and anxiety are so common, especially for moms who are trying to do and be everything! Let’s take a lesson from the beauty of light and let some things bounce! Let it go. You may need to clear some good things, and even some better things, in order to make room for the best things. Only you will know what that is. But don’t try to do it all. Find the beauty in being choosy and do the things that bring order, peace, and joy into your family life! You choose what stays and what goes. You create the colors of your life.
