Where is your focus today? Have you put on a grateful heart despite the uncertainties of life? Gratitude helps you fall in love with the life you already have. We often want to change the circumstances around us and think when this or that changes– we can then be grateful. I want to offer to you that you can be grateful today! We don’t need to wait any longer. Gratitude is an inside job.
What if we decide to become grateful now for the life we are currently living?
What are you grateful for right now? Can you answer that question? Let your brain begin to focus on the good right now. Say one thing out loud. Our brains are made to protect us or to help us survive and that is why we easily look to what isn’t going well than to what is.
The problem with this is when we focus on the negativity—it grows. Psychologists call this a negative bias. Negative events have a greater impact on our brains than positive ones. It can have a powerful effect on our behaviors, our decisions, and our relationships with others and especially with ourselves.
A simple example of this is to imagine taking a beautiful hike up in the mountains. The weather is great, the company is great, and the scenery is breathtaking. Halfway up the mountain, you encounter a rattlesnake. Though there is a little distance between you and the snake, it startles you and even scares you. As you finish the hike and head back to your car, another friend calls and asks how the hike was. Your first comment is, “I came upon a rattlesnake.” That negative event trumps all other positive ones.
We are all prone to negative bias and this is normal. The great thing is that even though we have negative events happen, we can choose where we put our focus by what thoughts we choose to carry with us. As I life coach, I love to help people become aware of their thoughts and that they have the power to put on new thoughts when ones they have been putting on over and over again are not serving them. This is how The Word Effect works. It allows us to decide what we want to think about in our lives despite the things we have no control of.
So today, I invite you to “put on” a grateful heart.
There are so many things we can’t control but our thoughts are something we choose to put on. We can choose to put on a grateful heart. For ideas on how to put on a grateful heart, check out my podcast, The Word Effect episode 4. I will give you three simple suggestions. The word effect works when we work it!
